Traveling to Watkins Glen, NY is a breathtaking ride through some of the greatest foliage in the United States. I visited Watkins Glen with my grandmother when I was about 14. There are spectacular areas to hike and enjoy nature’s beauty along with a town that harkens back to an era when times were much simpler. It is the kind of downtown where everyone says hello and makes you feel as though you belong. A variety of shops catering to tourists including, apparel shops with local attractions on tee shirts, sweat shirts, hats and more, restaurants with a variety of foods including burger joints, bars, ice cream shops and excellent steak houses.

When I used to go when I was younger there always was a road race in the month of August. The town would fill up with racers, their crews and the fans that followed the race car circuit. The road course was mapped out so that you could travel it yourself in the days leading up to the actual race. There also is a waterfall that you can reach via a moderately difficult hike. I have made that hike several times and have always found something interesting along the way, whether it is wildlife, interesting flowers and plants or fossils.

Many families love the Nags Head, Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills area as there are so many things to do besides go to the beach. If you like history, the Wright Brothers National Monument is in Kitty Hawk and shows where Wilbur and Orrville Wright made their first powered flight, has replicas of the gliders and shows the aerodynamics of all of their attempts.

At Jockey’s Ridge you will be able to climb the highest sand dune on the east coast in North America. Hang gliding lessons and rides are available for those who have no inhibitions when it comes to jumping off a cliff. For those kids at heart, you can also roll down the dune and have a great time. For those who don’t want to expend a great deal of energy or don’t care for history, you can play miniature golf at any number of places along the main road.

There are also a number of real surf shops where you can purchase brand name surf apparel from Burton, Billabong, Ride and others along with surfboards, wakeboards, and kites. Kitty Hawk Kites has been a staple on the Outer Banks for over 30 years and you can buy a kite that starts at $5 all the way up to Kite Board Kites.

As a kid we traveled by car to our various vacation destinations and stayed in hotels and visited the local sights and attractions. It wasn’t until I was married that I was introduced to camping Myrtle Beach Travel Park style.

The Myrtle Beach Travel Park is a throwback to the 1960’s and 1970’s and is a family only camp. You cannot rent a site in the park unless you are part of a family unit. Teenagers can’t get together with friends and reserve a spot. The campground closes the gate at 11 pm so and they enforce quiet time after dark. This keeps noise to a minimum and allows families to get their children to bed at a decent hour and they can enjoy the ocean breeze once the sun goes down.

It is a standard campground that has its own outdoor and indoor pool, lazy river, arcade, and concession stand and campground store. You wouldn’t even have to leave the campground during your entire stay as long as you planned well. On the way into the campground there is a Kroger grocery store and a Wal-Mart superstore. If you purchase most of what you need on the way in, you can get things you forget at the camp store.
